I was more affected by this documentary than I would have thought. I was surprised to find out just how bad some would get addicted to these games. Not only did it sicken me that W.o.W. could turn a person into a suicidal fool, but I could relate to it. In the past, I have had to deal with a video game addiction of my own. In fact, I still do. When I am not watching myself, it threatens to consume me. I lose track of time, my priorities become completely backwards. At that point, I am letting the computer dictate my actions, my schedule, my life. How can that be healthy? It is not. But I have been able to manage it now. Like Dan, I needed something outside myself to point out the fact that I did indeed have a problem.
You must admit... The game looks pretty cool.
While in high school, I took many classes, but one in particular seemed to possess ideas that blended with Culture Jam. The media has evolved in the past century with the technology it now uses. I feel like it's impossible to avoid, though. It's even on our cereal boxes. While I do enjoy the idea of a movement to free humanity of the media's brainwashing, I think we give Man too much credit. It is a lovely concept, but there will be people obstinate to believe what they see on TV. In all honesty, some of these things make me wish to give up on man kind. I feel as if we dig out own grave. If an apocalypse is coming, we brought it on ourselves. I would bet Apple is plotting to take over the world as we speak. On a dramatic note, 1984 is just a bit late.
I hope you get my "humor."

I agree with you, I am scared of what the future holds. The media and Technology is the thing that people rely on for everything, and are influenced to believe in something. What will happen within the next few years, who knows.
ReplyDeleteI think that video games like WoW are addicting because it's so easy to lose track of time doing something such as a quest. I wonder if someone becomes suicidal when they realize, "Wow, I really fucked up my real life because of this game, and now I have no idea what to do to get my life back." Like you, I think that's pretty foolish.
ReplyDeleteThe future of media scares me. Not the media itself, but what man is going to do with it. For every good purpose it serves, there are numerous evil purposes.
I was definately more affected by the documentary also. Growing up I never was around to many video games so I have no idea where these people were comming from. I really felt bad for these people! I'm glad you got it figured out now though! A game now and then isn't bad but when you get to the poent where it is altering your life that bad, then I guess it would be time to give it up!
ReplyDeleteOh no! Don't give up on mankind! Books like -Culture Jam- are excellent eye-openers, but we also need to play "devil's advocate." Do you find any places in the text where you can "talk back" or disagree with Lasn?
ReplyDeleteI think it shows us how we need to be open to all points of veiw. disagreeing is ok, but you always should be open minded.
